HD7870 Overclocking Questions

Hi,

 

I recently got my CPU overclocked stable so I decided to do my GPU. I have a VTX3D HD 7870 Black Boost Tahiti 2GB.

 

I read a few guides on overclocking so I used Afterburner to increase the core mhz by 25 and run Valley Benchmark on Extreme HD. I noted down all the score and I managed to get to 1200mhz (originally 975mhz) before it started to freeze/black screen/restart.

 

So I moved it back to to what I thought was a stable overclock but for some reason my reading are now failing or the FPS is down at 4-8FPS. Even when I revert Aftermarket back to stock and re-run the benchmark it still gives really low FPS.

 

Am I missing something or is this common?
