OLS

So I pulled out this old multi card reader thingy from and old HP computer I had laying around and I was curious if I would be able to make this into a USB Card reader?

not only complicated and too much work, is it worth it?
Last time I bought USB Card reader it was only 2 cents (only microsd though)

USB Cable cost more than that.

its just cutting off an unused usb 2 cable and spinning the wires together
whats so difficult about that?

Yes, but as @Blebekblebek said, it's probably not worth it given the cost of such things purpose made and new.

The wires going into the internal USB header can simply be soldered onto a USB2 plug (that you can get from electronics stores for anywhere between ~10p and £2) following the same pattern as is in the picture that @NrKj105 posted.

I would say half the fun of modding is trying things like splicing a USB head on to the connector and seeing if it works.  Tho, I recommend testing your new perfectly spliced media card reader on a computer you don't care about just in case you crossed the wrong wires and some issues arise.

That's true, but that is like 2-3 days wait even with prime.  Might as well have fun splicing wires. :)

Plus its $5.95!!!

Or just use an adapter like this if you're lazy like me: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B000V6WD8A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_qfWhzbEB5YMBR

I'm lazy, but sadly nobody sells these kinds of stuff in Norway, amazon barely ships and would probably cost me 10$ to get it home. eBay would take a month or more, I think 5 minutes cutting and taping just to test is better at this time. If it doesnt work it goes into the trash with the case anyways.

If you were closer i have one in an old case that uses a USB printer type plug (type B?) that you could have... Quite a strange connector really, but works...

Would probably just be another adapter from USB B to Standard USB anyways, way to much hassle haha. #adapters2017

Fair play... Just cut and stitch and see if it works - what is there to lose :)
