Hi Guys!

A few months ago i've built my new machine, but didn't really think about Storage.

I need around 1.5 - 2 TB for my PC and an external Backup device (Maybe a NAS?)

There are a few questions before i throw money away bcause i can't do it or whatever.

So...

Is it even possible to run a RAID 10 + NVme SSD with 4 Lanes + the GPU with 16 Lanes on my board? (because e.g. with SSD @ 4Lanes the sataports 5+6 get disabled)

would there be any performance issues, e.g. GPU only running @ x8 ?

Would it be a good idea to put 4 Sata-SSD's into a RAID10? xD Or should i go with normal HDD's? The PC should remain Silent^^

Or should i just use a RAID 0 - because critical Data will be stored on the external Solution anyway?

And - the External Backup Solution.

I'm totally clueless here, never had a NAS or anything like that - but i wan't one now (lost too many Photo's, Doc's ect. over the years)

Any suggestions on this?

Greetings from Vienna btw :)

SSD's are nice, but expensive.  I haven't had much problem with the sounds NAS drives make, but I have my NAS arrays in my basement.

You can build your own pretty cheap.  I've built my own, and they're great.  However, I love my Synology stations.  I have 1515+ and 1815+, both with expansions.  They are rock solid and work great.  I also have a small QNAP that I really like.

Overall, what are you looking to do?  That's a key question.  It's never wrong to have a NAS, with redundancy setup.

I'm using Seagate NAS & Ironwolf drives and they've been really great.  I've used WD RED and they work pretty decent too.  Don't use Desktop rated drives.  Specifically look for NAS drives.  Regular Desktop hard drives WILL FAIL, from the vigorous use in a NAS environment.  You haven't specified a budget or what you're looking to do, or the type of environment it will be used in.  Without a starting point, I'd recommend the Synology 1515+.  Has expandability, upgradable memory, excellent user interface, simple setup and use, and the ethernet ports can be bonded/bridged with link aggregation and failover.  Just get your own drives for the unit.
