It's my first time building a pc. I was thinking of getting a gtx 1070, a locked i5 7600 and a 144hz 1080p monitor.

Will I be able to run the more demanding games at anywhere near 144fps?

Also what about the more cpu-intensive games like gta v?

I'd get a locked i7 instead to push more frames

Rest of the specs? ram, mobo, PSU, HDD, SSD? GTX 1070 Is Middle-High end card, so you should definitly run everything 2015-early 2016 60fps for sure, at high-ultra settings of course.

Yeah, it should be good. I am actually on my first PC too, which coincidentally also has a 1070. I usually hit 80-90 fps on AAA titles.

Is there anything cheaper than a 7700 that I could get?

I would look at a Ryzen R5 1600 over an i5.
