Hi, I just got a X99 Strix board second hand from eBay, but seem to be having trouble with POSTing. I've tried 2 coolers and 2 PSUs and same problem. Everything is connected fine, but when I go to power the board, the PSU clicks. I'm only running 1 8-pin to the CPU and I think the case is with that. Should I have to run a 4-pin also? I'm more worried it's the CPU but I've had it work in another board previously. No Qcodes show, a red Power LED and yellow/green reset LED are shown when trying to power.

Component list:

- 6800K

- Corsair h110 AIO/Cooler Master 212x

- 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM

- Corsair RM650/Corsair AX750 PSUs

Any suggestions would be great.

It looks like from the pictures you uploaded, that you didn't plug in a second EPS power cable in it (3rd picture the 4 pin connector). Don't know how to explain it.

Mobo: Asus Maximus IX Hero

from what I could find, that 4pin isn't mandatory, but required for OCing

will the mobo not POST if that connector isn't plugged in ... dunno

Thanks for the replies! Here is a clearer picture of the 24-pin connector. I've tried RAM in them slots, also tried no RAM but still the same outcome. I don't have a 4-pin for either PSU to try so I'm just trying to see on here if anyone else has had issues similar. I've contatced the seller asking how they tested this board but I don't want to have to return it because it was a really good deal :P. When no CPU connectors are in, there's no power but no click from the PSU this time. Still no qcodes and I've checked switches on the board also. Starting to lose patience with the X99 chipset!

My X99 Strix posted without it. I did change the PSU to one with the extra connector just in case though.

A few weeks later the X99 Strix board stopped posting, then during diagnostics the VRM exploded. I found that many others had this issue as well with this board, they were not very reliable. I hope the board came with a warranty.

I dunno mate, but I would not buy ASUS even if my life depended on it

@NovaeRogX

remove the cooler, remove the CPU and inspect the LGA socket for bent pins

put the CPU back in and remove the backplate; then try powering it just by keeping the cooler in place your your hand applying slight pressure

no QR codes could indicate CPU problems or just a DOA mobo

The only Asus boards I have ever trusted were the Sabertooth (now TUF) series. The X99 Strix was the only board in stock at the time, and it will certainly be the last Strix branded item I will ever purchase.

This is the 2nd ASUS board I've gotten and it had issues too. No problems with my MSI Z170 like this or even my old ASRock Z68 board either. To me, it does sound like there isn't enough power getting to the CPU or something is shorting the connection. I'm going to try and rig 2 PSUs together to get both 8-pin and 4-pin connections to at least rule that theory out. But I think I'll just have to return the board and get another. All this hassle is turning me to Ryzen but still on the fence over all that.

I'll keep updating as the progress goes on, but thanks everyone!

Just an update, I tested the board with 2 PSUs for CPU power and still the same outcome. I feel like the 8-pin connector on the board may be damaged and causing a shortage somewhere. I shall have to return the board, but my next questions would be; do I get a new X99 board and avoid ASUS or sell the 6800K and go back to my 6700K, or maybe consider Ryzen or wait for the X299 lineup?

EDIT: I managed to get the board to POST by using the 8-pin from one PSU and the 24-pin from another. But I cannot POST from just 1 PSU. Can anybody explain why I'd need both a 750w and 650w PSU to power only the board?

Thanks
