Difference between aspect and 1:1

This might be a dumb question, but I noticed in my new 1440p monitor there is 2 settings for wide screen: aspect or 1:1. What does it mean exactly? I noticed my FPS goes way up if I set it to 1:1. It came out of the factory with the aspect mode on.
