Best rescue Linux distro?

Hi all,

I'm trying to put together a SHTF USB drive and wanted to install one of the "Rescue" branded linux distribution on it. There are a few however (see this article for instance) and I was wondering if anyone has reccomendations based on experience as to which one might be the best, or if maybe I'm simply better off installing a persistent version of Debian or Ubuntu and outfit it with some specific programs (which?).

The factors would be ease of use, features, compatibility with different hardware out of the box, and the ability to cater to a windows install naturally.

Thank you!
