Need Help Upgrading from AMD to Intel

Go to solution Solved by Gonio,

Plug in should do the trick without formating. Only thing different could be drive letter, but you can change that trough diskmanager.

Hi everyone,

I built my first computer last Christmas with a FX-8350 and DDR3 ram on a M5A97 R2.0 mobo. I have 2 ssds (1 for the Windows 10 Operation System, the other for games) and 1 HDD for games too. I am planning a system upgrade with an i5-6600k, Asus Z170-E mobo, 16gbs of Ballistix Sport DDR4 ram.

I have two questions really. 1) since this is my first upgrade, what sort of things do I have to look for? & 2) Is it possible to keep all the games on the second SSD and HDD and install it on the new mobo without having to delete all the data?

Thanks a lot for the help people!

Nothing big, depending on whether or not it was an OEM windows copy or not, you might have to reinstall it. As long as your games weren't on the same drive as your OS, you should be fine.

Why not wait till Zen gets out? (new line of AMD cpu's)

Yes, you should be able to keep all your games. However, savegames might be stored on your windows drive.

Windows "should" be able to install new drivers when you switch motherboards/CPU's, however, I never got it to work...

The unlocked has no stock cooler. So if you don't have an aftermarket cooler already, you should buy one. Want a good high end aircooler that can handle OC, take Scythe Fuma. Noctua performance but for nicer price.

I have a Hyper 212 Evo for a cooler so I got that covered. I more confused about the storage situation and how to bring them over.

You will have to format / reinstall windows on your SSD that has windows on it because you have a new chipset/cpu.
Also, for your games, as said, your saves should be in C:user/my documents  or somwhere in your user folder, you should back up all your save game files if you want to keep your single player saves.

Some games could require a full reinstlal because sometimes games creates registry keys and some other files on the installation that are saved in the OS.
Most games should work with no problems tho...

Any other question ?

Very simple:

  • Copy all data you want to keep thats on the OS drive to another of your drives. Think docs, save games, files, whatever.
  • Disconnect all drives but the OS drive on new mobo and install Windows + other stuff required.
  • Connect other drives and all data should be there once you are in Windows. If needed you can change disk letter in diskmanager.
  • For games you might have to reinstall or if it's from copy the content from the steam folder and place them back once steam is installed.
