mic not working with combo jack

So somewhat recently the mic cable broke on my headset (hyperx cloud) and rather than get a whole new headset, i decided to replace the cable. I used some ugreen 3.5mm extension cable that i had chopped the male end off of. I soldered a new male connector from an old pair headphones. The mic and everything now work fine on my desktop.

However, when i tried it with my laptop which has a combo jack, the mic doesn't get detected. I am using the adapter that came with the headphones. I tried with a different standalone mic and it worked fine, so I know it's not the combo cable. I tried with a shitty usb to 3.5mm adapter i had and the mic was recognized, but it was very very quiet even with it maxed out in windows settings.

Does anyone know why the mic would now not work only on my laptop? With the original cable everything worked perfectly fine and now it seems to only not work on my laptop. Running windows 10.

Is the TRS plug you used a 4-pole?

yeah. I have been using this combo plug for a while, and had no problems using it on the laptop until i replaced the mic cable.

edit - Or are you referring to the replacement cable that I used?
