Hey so I just put together a new build and I've been having trouble putting my finger on exactly what the problem with it is. Hoping someone here with more experience may be able to point me in the right direction!

First, here are the relevant specs (everything else I had already been using in another build):
-Asus Maximus VIII Hero
-Corsair vengeance LPX 32gb (8gb x4) ddr4-2666
-Asus gtx 1080 strix
-i7 6700k

So once I got everything put together I booted it up and installed windows without any issues. Once I got everything going I went into the bios and upped the ram from the 2133 the mobo had put it at to the 2666 its rated at. Immediately I started having BSODs in windows, especially when anything stressful would run like a game. Next I put memtest86 on a flashdrive and ran it- it immediately started finding errors.

I am currently in the process of returning and replacing the ram but am worried that might not solve the issue. Does anyone think it could be an incompatibility problem with the motherboard, or a problem with the motherboard itself?

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

if at stock speeds memtest returned errors, then the ram is 99.9999999% at fault. Very rarely will it be your board. The RMA should resolve your issue.

I have a few questions as I just went through some of this.

1. Is the ram you bought on the qvl for that Motherboard at the speed and density used?

2. Check what voltage you are supposed to be running the ram when running at that speed. Look at the vccsa and ram volts spec'd in the xmp profile.

The vengeance ram I am running right now in my x79 system is on the qvl for my board, but only in up to 6 slots, not 8. I have to run it at 1.55v ram, 1.15 vccsa to be stable at 1600. I can run all 8 sticks at 1333.

Your ram is probably ok.  test it with memtest at +.1v, +.1v and see if it stabilizes.  if so try at reducing your overvolt a bit so you can find the optimal configuration.
