Alright, first thing's first. I have no clue where to put this so feel free to criticize me on where I should've. Second, a friend and I came up with an idea where we essentially want to make an HTC Vive with a live camera feedback built directly into the inside of the glasses. We wanted to use something like this as the base model and then rig it so that there is a full display on the inside of the goggles streaming live feedback to the display.  We weren't sure how we were gonna do this so anything closely resembling our idea would be great if you sent me a link/image of it.

One question: how are you going to mount a display inside of it? A phone? Or you can buy a phone screen, but modern phones suck when it comes to providing schematics for them so its near impossible to interface with a individual phone screen on its own.

That's the problem. I don't know how we'd do such a thing because neither of us have custom PCB/programming experience but we thought that it'd be a cool idea. I was hoping that we could just custom mount a display inside of the goggles and then somehow rig the camera to stream directly to the display. But then I got to thinking that VR headsets use two displays with custom lenses to diffract light.

In this case it would be much easier to mod a camera in front of google cardboard or just use the built in camera on the phone. This involves advanced programming for android, and probably is not something easily achievable for beginners, however, if you're determined, it would be a cool project.

We also don't want it to be too bulky to the point where it's just like taping a brick to your face. It needs to be fairly compact which is why we want to go with something prebuilt to minimize bulk. The link that I posted is a pair of goggles with a camera built in so if we could remain within those dimensions then that'd be great.

A screen that close to your face is just not practical... you need to place it some distance from your eyes. the only way i can see it working is if flexible displays came to mass market, and i think we're still quite a bit away from that.

Yeah. I know that LG was working on flexible displays but they were still trying to figure out how to hook up inputs like HDMI to them. On the bright side, something that small and compact wouldn't need an input as the camera would be hard wired into the display. The goggles that I sent the link to already have a tiny display in the bottom corner of your vision but something larger would be nicer. The embodiment of the project is supposed to be something where what people see is a separate display (probably an array of LED's that can change patterns from say a custom script) but there's a camera attached to the inner display which streams to you live what is going on around you so it's not like staring at a wall

...or... you can just turn off the display/make them transparent...
