Hello, I'm not exactly sure if I'm writing this in the correct sub form, but I just have a simple question. Does removing the hard drive & buying a new one/Windows disk get rid of viruses? ( my PC is ridden with terrible things I believe may be far worse than viruses ) its bad. I can't even do a restore point or clean the thing normally because the viruses have taken control of that & the anti virus cleaner. I've been gaming miserably for so long & it is my fault I know that much, I believe my young mind also failed to build the PC of my dreams.

Please help me with options, preferably cheap ones, I still don't have a job.

Thank you

- Acie the tech noob

Which version of windows do you have?

Dear Sors, I wish I could dedicate a video explaining my windows and my frustration with it, but I'll try doing so in text, I had windows 8 but I got an update saying let's go to windows 8.1 for free & I'm like awesome. I currently have windoes 8.1 but not really because I get a blue screen telling me to activate windows 8.1 with a product key but I can't do that because I lost contact with the person that installed windows for me, this blue screen is a torture when I'm gaming, its like it knows when I'm about to make some MLG plays and then just tabs me out, ( speaking of tabbing out ) sorry, but my games can't tab out and in, I have to spend like 15 tries then it works, and if I don't keep the games in full screen they flicker like crazy.

If you have win 8, 8.1 or 10, you can just reset the OS to get rid of all the problems.

For win 8 I think you move the mouse to the right bottom corner, then look for a PC settings option.

For win 10 click this Icon:

All Settings > Update & security > Reset this PC > Get started> Select the option to keep your files, so the only thing modified is Windows.

i'm not sure it will get rid of the viruses, and there might be corrupted files, the best thing to do is to reinstall windows IMO

Yes It does get rid of virus, and no, I don't think he should try to reinstall windows by himself, if I understand it correctly he doesn't have any windows media to do that.

if it is a corrupted file whenever he will open it it will be the same all over, and i don't know how you're so sure about getting rid of everything

The recovery files are not stored in the same format or partition that windows is, the virus do not alter them.

If I try doing that it says I'm missing something, which I'm assuming is the viruses deleted my ability to. @Sors

Alright then, the person who installed windows for you made a mistake, and you don't have the recovery files in the other partition.

So it looks like you have few options now.

You can try to boot in safe mode, and run the antivirus.

Or you can try to get a hold of media to install windows again, DVD or USB.

Understand that if you do format the PC, you'll lose all the files you have in the disc.

I'll try doing the safe boot version first, but what kind of media am I looking for? Because I do have a USB and friends that have windows that could possibly help me out.

You'll need a windows DVD, or ISO image to create a bootable USB drive to reinstall windows.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

When you boot in safe mode, first try to run malwarebytes:

https://www.malwarebytes.org/dl-confirm/

Get the free version.

You can also try with this:

http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/free-home-trials/anti-virus

You don't need to enter your real email, just type whatever@dot.com or something like that and it'll let you get the trial.

Thank you so much, I'll get back to you within a week or less because Comcast sucks, I don't have WiFi. So I've been using my phone this whole time when I found out about Linus on youtube and decided to give this website a try.
