Definitely the R9 380X if his PSU can handle it. Depending of his cpu and other hardware, 450W PSU with good quality is enough or it might require a good 550W.

Yeah i know thats why i said spend the extra 17, oh and also don't push your luck mate the r9 390 is not more powerful, in fact i am running a gtx 970 in my pc right now as i type this and i can tell you it can kick the shit out of a 390.

Still the 390. Look, fanboy all you want over your 970 but the facts remain the same. The 390 is about 5% ahead in DX11 and 25-30% ahead in DX12

+185 is nothing - most people get +400. Most 390s get +180. Also, 512-bit bus vs 224-bit bus, The 970 needs double the memory clockspeed for that to matter

I own GTX970 as well and can get comfortable +220Mhz core/200 memory at the least, but R9 390 just is faster in majority of things. There are times when 970 is faster or equal, but still R9 390 is most of the time the more powerful one.

 

Pretty much every benchmark shows them at best near equal, with R9 390 pulling ahead by anything between 5%(DX11) to 50% (DX12).
