You're taking an angle I wasn't. I'm talking about the fact that without consoles a lot of the best controllers would never have existed. That Wii controller came with a wii

 

There are plenty of aftermarket controllers of extremely varying quality, while there at  some decent ones the PS4 controller is my current favourite, and I use it on my PC 

 

And none of this ties to why we would want a single platform 

 

That means no more first party controllers, except I guess  the steam controller,  without having a useful D-Pad  is functionally useless to me

Holy shit! I took an angle you weren't? In a debate? That's unheard of! Why it is almost like we... don't agree or something? huh. OMG A WII CONTROLLER CAME WITH A WII? Did you also know the bird is the word?
 

But on a serious note you seem to think the only reason the wiimote exists is because the wii exists. If you had actually read and been educated by my previous post you would have read the part where I pointed out that not only could any controller be made for the pc, games could even require their own controllers or specific addons. Diversity for controllers would be literally limited only by the minds of the game makers or anyone that feels like making one.

No more 1st party controllers gives birth to the very diversity you were talking about. And you are forgetting with the deaths of playstation, xbone, and nintendo all those games would go to pc (which they already are) and so... the controllers come with them. So right off the bat pc has the controllers of every console that dies as well as a full keyboard. And the damn steam controller.
