What's the point of extended mouse pads?

I don't see any point of having a mouse pad that extends to your keyboard when you're only using a little part of it for the mouse.

So, what's the purpose of them?

I have one and it comforts your wrists when using the keyboard and if you move the keyboard up, there is more space for the mouse and it is "seamless" (there's no border or gap between the keyboard and mouse pad.
