I want to plug an external 3.5" hard drive into my modem to have a bit of files on my home

network and I want to know if it is alright to keep a hard drive running basically 24/7 and if it would cause any damage over time. Thanks.

depends on what kind of drive it is, if its a mechanical drive than yes eventually it would fail. Especially since those kinds of drives aren't rated for constant on time. If its an SSD based hard drive than no its fine. When I was building my NAS server (24/7 run time) I got WD Reds which are specifically rated for constant uptime.

Just get two cheap drives and run them in raid so if one fails you just buy another one and replace the one that failed.

Current Build: Core i7 4790k @ 4.6, Asus Maximus VII Hero, Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400mhz 8gb (2x4gb), GTX 980ti, NZXT Kraken X61, Fractal Define R5  EVGA Supernova B2 850w, Some 300gb hard drive.
