Standard VGA Adapter

Go to solution Solved by Jimsterr,

Alright placing the ram in the 2nd and 4th slot seemed to keep the computer stable for him.

Friend just went through a lot of troubleshooting to getting his computer to post with his new r9 380. His computer is now stable but with only 1 stick of ram inserted into his computer. Does anyone know if something is wrong with his motherboard or memory?  He had both of his ram working when his GT 640 was installed. After installing all of the latest drivers it seems that windows detects his card also as a Standard VGA Adapter. Anyone know what the problem could be? He is always using a msi 970 g46-a motherboard with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 and EVGA GS 650w power supply.

Normally Standard VGA Adapter means the graphics card drivers are not installed.

Are you on a 32bit OS? 32Bit windows can only address 4GiB of memory addresses including VRAM, so if you insert a new video card with more VRAM, you might suddenly be well over that 4GiB limit.

So, if you have a 32bit installation, that might explain it.

No, it is a 64 bit and the card is only has 4 gb of vram.

Okay so he uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and it worked. The problem was that his pc froze and didn't want to boot with his ram. He took out the ram in the 3rd slot and now it's booting and working fine with only 1 stick of ram in the first slot. The only problem now is the ram issue. Is the motherboard causing this? and would installing the ram in the 2nd and 4th slot help?

Odd, but if it works, that's sweet!
