My contract on Verizon will be up this summer. If I want to move to a different carrier like Ting, can I still do updates?

You need to see if the Droid supports those bands on other carriers. Usually Verizon exclusive phones will not support other bands from other carriers.

I have looked into that already. I just want to know if I can update/upgraded android.

That depends on the phone, and if the maker of the phone has an upgrade path.  Furthermore, you can update android distros over the internet.  It has nothing to do with who the carrier is.

Yes it does, because Verizon has phones locked down to where you can't root them or anything (safely anyways), with the exception of the Moto X 2014 now.

So like I said, since that phone is exclusive to Verizon it may not work with other carriers.

Since that is the deal, Google's Android updates go through Motorola (now Lenovo), then get passed to Verizon to ship them out.

Really?  I've been able to upgrade the OS off carriers through the internet regardless of plans from both Verizon and Sprint.

I didn't say you couldn't do it. I said that the phone OP has is exclusive to Verizon. So unless it supports other carriers, it won't work, and they won't even get updates until Verizon pushes them out.

I could be wrong, but I'm confident this is the case.
