Web Server Software (Linux and Windows) Plus Book.

I'm am attempting to get into Server Administration and setting up web servers. I have experience programming computers, such as with Java and HTML, but have never done much in the way of configuring servers. I was using Abyss Web Server, and although it got the job done it seemed to be at a very high level and not what I was looking for. I am looking for a low level piece of software and a book explaining it, almost to use as a reference book. I dont think Abyss would prepare me for opportunities in the future and the reason I wont be using it. 

 

Thanks for any information you can give. Oh and heres a bonus. At the moment I am using Windows 7 as my server environment and I am using default windows sharing to act as a NAS server. Does anyone know what I would have to use when I transfer over to a Linux server later so I can keep my shares going in a mainly windows Network or does anyone know a piece of software, that runs on Windows(and hopefully linux) to act as a NAS better than the basic windows sharing.

What is really nice is zpanel. It's basically a free cpanel that does everything for you.

I will look into it but I fear this will be something like Abyss that "does everything for you" and doesnt force you to learn it your self.

Linux for webservers, save your self the headache.
Using apache will be a wise choice, very easy to set up.
If your distro is Debian based they you can DL via the GUI store or just google "$distro + install apache"
