How did this happen?

Clean it. The amount of gunk that builds up in laptops and that causes overheating, I have seen it too many times. look up a "tear down" for you specific model (the model number will be written underneath the laptop) and tear it down till you can get access to the fan and clear out all the dust build up and put it all back together. This will help a heap, but it will still run warm/hot due to the older nature of the laptop, and the fact it is a laptop. If you are still having heat issues, try getting a laptop cooling pad, or make sure the laptop has plenty of air flow (avoid sitting on carpet, leather etc) make sure the laptop is on a hard surface, or if it is on your lap, take note of were the intakes and exhaust vents are, and keep the clear and uncovered. I also see my sister (repeatedly) leave her laptop on her bed and on the leather couch and then wonder why its hot.

it is an old acer aspire running  2 cores @ 2.6 GHz  It's an intel pentium.

Theres your answer

You probably need new thermal compound for your cpu, and if you have a dedicated GPU

Older laptops, I think tend to overheat easier after being used for a few years. Also, try cleaning it out, because dust. And make sure, especially with an aging laptop, that you play on a hard surface, like a desk or table, and to not play on fabric or whatnot. I know this because my brother plays games on his laptop while laying down in bend, so the heat of his laptop gets stuck in the fabric and then his laptop tends to get.

I would still clean it, there is a lot of dust in the air. computers are great at picking it up and holding onto it. I work in an office with over 200 computers, the biggest problem we have is dust. Users complain about computer performance, I clean them out, some are so bad, there is a thick layer of dust on the intake and heat sinks. Once they are cleaned, I return them, and they are instantly perform much faster. With newer computers, once they get to a certain temp they start the "Thermal Throttle" massively impacting performance. I clean my computer regularly, maybe every few months.
