ISP - Netflix Not working

Go to solution Solved by Bubblez,

Disabled my Router/modems IPv6 and this seemed to solve the problem.

According to a Manager at Telus (my ISP) they just recently started using IPv6 with their customers, and are still encountering errors and problems on their end. This could be the cause... So if anybody runs into a problem like this, then try going into your modems control panel and disabling your IPv6.

Hi Everybody. Not really sure how to explain this well as I don't know where the problem lies, but I will try my best.

My ISP is TELUS (canada) and for the past month I have been having issues where videos on Netflix will not load. I have contacted Netflix and they say that they are receiving less then 1mb/s from my computer and that's why the videos wont load... essentially the videos are timing out. Netflix is positive that the problem lies with my ISP, and not with their website / servers.

The problem is seems to be with my IP address. If I use a VPN I can access Netflix no problem. If I wait for my IP address to change on its own (it changes every 24 - 48 hours) then it will start working again, but only for a day or two, then it wont work again unless I get a new IP address or use a VPN.

Telus can't figure out the problem. Today they sent a tech out to my house and replaced all the hardware for the internet... 10 minutes later, Netflix again wouldn't work for me, and I resorted to using a VPN to access Netflix.

I don't know what else to do, which is why I am turning to the trusted Linus community. Netflix says its my ISP, my ISP says essentially "I don't know" and they say that I am receiving my full 100mb/s... yet Netflix says it isn't reaching them... so there is a break somewhere.

Any help would be amazingly awesome as I would love to watch my Netflix again hassle free. Has anybody encountered anything like this before?

Not sure why no one told you this... BUT that ISP throttles certain websites one being netfilx. ESPECIALLY during peek hours. Basically nothing you can do about it except use a vpn so your ISP doesnt no what your doing.

EDIT: If you dont believe me look it up. Lots of ISP's do that with netflix, hulu, ect

Yes, I know that throttling happens during peak times... I have encountered this before. But when the ISP throttles my internet, the speed drops only by 10 - 20mb/s at the most. This leaves me with 80mb/s regardless at the most highest of peak times... which is way more then enough for watching netflix.

And I could be mistaken, but in Canada I'm pretty sure its illegal to throttle a specific website.

Thirdly... it happens at totally random times throughout the day. not just at peak times... it has also happened at like 1 or 2 in the morning, which is not a peak time.

sounds like your ip address is either being timed out, in which case ipconfig/renew  in cmd or  check your proxy settings

Is Telus cable? You can change your IP as many times as you want in 99% of the cases.

Telus uses fiber in my community. As for renewing my IP address.... I can go into the control panel of the modem and select the "release/renew" button to get a new IP address... but its hard to get a new IP address... idk why, but it usually takes upwards of 30 minutes of just sitting there pushing that button before you finally get a new IP address.

Needless to say, I dont have the patients or time to sit there for 30 minutes per day trying to get a new IP address.

Its not a throttling issue... there are numerous court cases and laws the prevent Canadian companies throttling specific websites in CANADA. Thats right, CANADA, not the USA.

I'm disappointing that's what some people keep saying even tho I'm telling you that is not what is happening. I'm here looking for possible answers... not a broken record player. The first person who mentioned throttling is ok, since it was a valid possibility. But when people keep saying "throttling" after I said, nope, not throttling.... god damn it.

Does anybody have useful suggestions???

Yes. What I said.

Haha, I appreciate it Gabbs, but I shouldn't have to pay for a VPN for something I'm paying my ISP for access too.... Just wish somebody here knew what the problem might be, or how to deal with Telus so they figure this shit out.
