PC Freezes/Deadlocks. No BSOD.

Go to solution Solved by adiprz,

Found a spare power supply I could use. So far, I haven't experienced any problems. I guess the PSU was giving me problems.

Note: I went to Event Viewer and saw the Event ID 6008. It noted something to do with my unexpected shutdown (which in my case, is the freeze). Looked up the causes of Event ID 6008 and most people are saying it's a hardware issue.

Hello. This is my first time to post a PC-related problem of mine in a forum, and I'm pretty sure the people in this community are always willing to help. I'm also quite new to the PC environment, so please bear with me. prekesh-happy.png

Anyway, on to the problem. This is a custom build and I got this PC about a month ago. I was running on on-board graphics and all of a sudden, my PC just froze. I couldn't move my mouse and my keyboard was also not responding. I thought to myself, "Maybe it's just the lack of a graphics card". Once I got my graphics card, the freezing still persisted. Since everything was still under warranty, I decided to bring my PC to the place where I bought it from. I left it there to be diagnosed (they used memtest86, furmark and some HDD program checker) After a few days, they told me that there was nothing wrong. No hardware issues and it never froze on them while they were diagnosing it. With that said, I decided to get my PC back. Despite what those people said, it still froze on me as soon as I started using it again. Brought my PC the second time, they said the same thing. No problem whatsoever. When I got it back (from the second visit to the store), it still froze. The hard part about this freeze is that it happens randomly. It either happens when I'm browsing, playing games or even on idle.

At this point, I tried solving the problem myself. I tried turning off fast startup, running "sfc /scannow" on command prompt (no errors), updated both my BIOS and the drivers of my GPU. I also thought it was a hard drive issue, so I removed my SSD m.2 and my SSHD (I tried using both as a primary drive. Freeze still occurred.) I used my old hard drive instead. It still freezes. It doesn't freeze when I boot up in Safe Mode, though. I've tried running memtest86, furmark and prime95 myself just to see if the people that diagnosed my PC were telling the truth. Weirdly, the tests show no errors but it froze a few minutes AFTER I stopped the programs. Apparently, it doesn't freeze during the stress tests.

Hopefully, someone can help me with my problem. Thank you! prekesh-grin.png

Chassis: Phanteks Enthoo Pro M
Motherboard: Gigabyte H170-D3HP
Processor: Intel Core i5 6600
HDD/SSDs: Crucial MX200 250GB m.2
Seagate Desktop SSHD 1TB
Seagate HDD 500GB
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15

RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY DDR4 16GB (8GBx2) 2133MHz
PSU: Corsair RM750
OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

*Update*

Motherboard replaced. Freezing still occurs. I'll try running memtest86 overnight to see if my RAM is not the issue. If it's not, I'll see if I can get my PSU checked up.

*Update 2*

Found the problem. Apparently, it was the PSU.

Freezing huh? Normally for me it's a RAM or voltage issue when overclocking. The CPU isn't damaged or anything? Doesn't skylake bend if you transport a built pc with a heatsink on it?

That's the extreme last case scenerio anyway, if they built it does it come with a slight overclock?

Hello! Thanks for the reply. I have no plans on overclocking, and my RAM showed no errors when I tried to test it with MemTest86. Also, the CPU isn't damaged. It runs perfectly fine on prime95. No errors whatsoever. And no, it doesn't come with a slight overclock.

You didn't happen to install anything funny, did you?

Nope, I haven't. The only programs I have on my PC right now are a couple of games, Google Chrome, furmark, prime95, CPUID HWMonitor and MSI Afterburner.

Darn... Well, sorry, I tried. Don't know if I have any useful input other than that...

Have you checked all of the connections and made sure your cables aren't bad?

I'm planning on replacing my motherboard since it's still under warranty. I'm just not sure if it's the main cause of all of this, since my CPU, GPU and RAM are perfectly fine. My PSU makes a certain high pitched sound whenever I do stress tests (probably coil whine) but I'm pretty sure that doesn't mean it's defective, right?

I don't know, I think so. Did you happen to try another PSU?

If you remember, Benji said it might be a voltage issue.

Sadly, I don't have a spare PSU I can use for the mean time.

If ever it is a voltage issue, what am I supposed to do? I don't really overclock so I don't know anything about voltages and what not.

I'm not too sure without having a spare power supply... If you happen to have the opportunity, try a different one. Otherwise, let's hope the new motherboard works...

Alright. Since we've narrowed it down to either the motherboard or the PSU, I'll just have to replace both. Thank you!

For the sake of money, I wouldn't really suggest replacing both. However, if you have the money or can return the one you don't need, by all means.

If it STILL doesn't work after that, I apologize for wasting your time.. but let's hope that's it.

Before you spend any money, take it back to the shop you bought it from and explain your situation, ask one of them to take it home with them and game on it, use it for a week, it will freeze for them and they'll replace the parts for you. We used to do that when I was a motorcycle mechanic, if a bike came in and it was an intermittent fault we would give them a bike to use for a week while the head technician used their bike for a week.

Oh, sorry for not mentioning this beforehand, but both parts are under warranty. I've also spoken to the shop and they said they were willing to replace it since I told them it wasn't working properly since day 1. So I'm pretty sure I can get it replaced for free. Thank you for all your help. Much appreciated.  :)

Ah I see, that's good of them, I hope that that solves the issue you're having, it's a pain when stuff like this happens, I wish I knew more about the z170 platform so I could help more but I'm an intel noob, if it was an FX rig I'd be of some use lol.

Hello. I was able to replace my motherboard. Sadly, the freezing still occurs. I'll try to replace my RAM next time. If that still doesn't do the trick, maybe the PSU is what's giving me problems. At this point, I'm really running out of ideas.
