You are only limited by the interface. If it is a SATA drive going into a SATA MoBo, go for it.

if it is an M.2 drive and there is no M.2 on your desktop MoBo, then NoGo.

The only difference is size and potentially the interface with which it connects. Most motherboards use SATA 3, but some use M.2. You have to check to be sure its compatible.
