Hi guys

I was on gumtree and found some 2008 macbook black and macbook air for cheap money.

They do need to be repaired, but I am willing to repair them and I have experience

I would use that laptop for uni stuff, playing WoW in class serious note taking and just trying out the Apple brand

At the moment two possibilities are

Macbook Black 13" ( loose screen cable) 2008

Macbook Air "13 2008 (hinge needs to be replaced)

Obviously the air has much better graphics card, but the black is in better condition, upgradable RAM. I am going to use it for note taking and occasional video watching

Is there anyone here with recent experience with these machines?

El Capitan is out now for 2 weeks and I have heard great performance jumps is it true?

note: I know there are other decent win based laptop out there but I do not care. I want to try apple

I did kind of the same thing you did but I sold the macbook after a while. As far as I know the new OS are great. Apple is good for having support with their older computers. I put yosemite vs. mountail lion and there was a good increase of performance and it was smooth.

Note: this was on the plastic shell core 2 duo 2010 macbook

thank you for your quick response

The laptops listed above are £150 and £120 respectively

I found a unibody 2008 ( up to 8GB DDR3 ram and GT9400m, "decent"gpu for watching FHD on monitors or somewhere and for everyday) for £200. I like it a lot as it is working, metal construction that I absolutely love on my HTC one M8 and the seller seems decent

The performance is going to suck, especially on El Capitan because they are 2008 macbooks. They did not have good performance until the 650m Gpu's around 2012 and then they started overheating. You are talking about outdated macbooks running Modern OSX. They can do it, but you aren't going to get a good feel for the current apple experience.
