Restoring Factory Settings

If I backed up all my files that I want to keep, how can I (easily) restore my laptop to it's factory settings?

I've tried it with another laptop by formatting the drive and then use the same Windows key it used before, but then, Windows wouldn't activate "because the key was already activated".

Is there a way to reset it to factory settings, so I don't have to activate Windows again?
