Asus HD 7870 problem

Go to solution Solved by Shoob,

It's probably dead. Asus doesn't put cooling on the memory and I'm almost certain that's the issue. Your last resort is baking it.

Hello everybody, i have an radeon 7870 showing quite weird screens, i had this problem a time ago and didn't find any solutions so i just bought a new one, but i found this forum when i started watching linus videos and just wonder if u guys have any experience with this problem.

The screen shows the same problem if conected DVI or HDMI. While loading in windows there is just some traces, but once i log in everything just turn into some texture. Running Ubuntu its all just pink, don't even load the login screen, here is some screenshots:

I have Windows 7 Professional x64, Intel core i5 3330, mobo Gigabyte B75M-D3H, 8gb ram, Cougar RX 500W.

Already changed the thermal paste, upgraded the bios and nothing changes.

Thanks for reading so far, sorry about the bad english and if i posted in the wrong section, kinda new here.

HD7870-05.jpgSo it would seem. I guess the Older DC2 cooler didnt have proper memory cooling (assuming nothing is missing in this pick)

There should be thermal pads - for some reason I can't find a pic of them in any of their coolers but I am certain they are present now.

EDIT: Half of them are in the pic - other half not. Weird.

Anyhow, any OCs OP?

The thermal pad in the gpu you mean? as i remember it is exactly as shown in your picture. And no, i never overclocked it, i don't trust my pc cooling.

Thanks for the tip, ill follow.

EDIT: There is any guide for proper baking? Like the temperature and time? I know some but was wondering if there is a better one heh..

Hmmm, how long did it run fine for before breaking?

1 year and 10 months only..

Odd. But I doubt the VRAM is overheating - it uses 0.006V so it's probably not heat - likely somethng broke. RMA it.

Unfortunately i couldnt rma it since i had only 1 year warranty :<

1 year warranty? Very odd. Asus usually offer 3.

Well, thats weird, ill try to contact them directly to see if its still valid, but since i opened it, to change the thermal paste, i think it violates the contract, doesn't it?

If you've removed the cooler it voids the warranty, yes. Take a look at it again in case you've put paste where it shouldn't be or something is lose. Might be the cause.

Yeah, i tried this process a few times already and nothing changes, i only used paste on the gpu as it came originally, and none in the memory, maybe i should try putting some in the memory?

Im going to try the baking process right now, and them try it on again.
