Hdd Led not blinking

Go to solution Solved by runit3,

Idk , i remember it blinking in BIOS, my bad, Are you sure it doesnt?

Honestly, I've never looked at my HDD LED on any build...probably ever... Maybe some REALLY old core 2 duo builds just because they were so damn slow and there was nothing else to look at

I really wouldn't worry about it at all. If there was a serious hardware fault with the board you would have broken power buttons, reset buttons, etc. Any functionality hooked up to the cluster of switch headers would be hosed if, for example, you had a series of traces that got cut somehow.

My hd led has stopped working suddenly. Pc works fine. Both hdds are working fine .
Ran chkdsk, diagnostic tool, malwarebytes , no errors. NO problems in the pc so far. Just the hd led wont work. I have checked the led , wiring , polarity .. no difference . Is it a board problem ? Board is m5a97 r2

Sounds like your LED bulb went out. Fairly rare, but it will eventually happen to every LED. Not much point in replacing it unless you really like watching it flash about.

I agree with that, but it could also be something with your motherboard.

True. He could always hook up a multimeter to the leads after he removes the LED. But if something was wrong with the single HDD activity lead you would expect something else to be going wrong with the rest of the traces next to it (Power sw, reset sw, speaker, etc.).

Don't see that in the OP.... anyways....

If you hook the broken LED up to another power source does it turn on? If not sounds like the board is shorting out the LED. If it's fully operational on another power source your HDD LED activity is broken on the board in some aspect.

Process of elimination.

will flashing a new bios help?

hook up a multimeter to the leads and see if you're getting any voltage readings. If you're not, the hardware itself is busted. I've never seen a corrupted BIOS nuke out a single activity lead, although I'm sure stranger things have happened.

last thing i remember when it was working was running driver verifier for some time. After that probably it stopped. But its not even blinking while in the bios. So i doubt its the cause.

I dont have a multimeter. For now i have removed the header to avoid any problem, Should i claim warranty ?, idc about the hdd led not blinking , i just dont want any damage done to my other parts cause of a faulty board. Pc  running fine for 2 days since it started.

Why would an HDD activity LED be blinking in the BIOS? None of the information there is housed in your drives, it's all on-board.

Thanks , what do you think about the driver verifier though , it made my pc real slow when it ran , any chances it might be the culprit?

thats weird , my dad's pc too blinks the hdd led as soon as i press the power sw.

It should blink when you press the power switch. Most boards run through pre-checks to identify hardware faults prior to entering the BIOS. However, once you're in the BIOS there should be no HDD activity.
