Hey guys,

So I'm thinking of creating a new build, I'm a little bit of a newbie - so forgive my lack of knowledge about some stuff.

I just wanted to see your suggestions and feedback on this build. Purpose of this build is to have a compact computer that I can use to replace my Macbook as my design workstation, yet be able to play the latest video games. I'm from Australia, so the cost of this build is $1980, however would love to cut cost where I can (obviously).

CPU: Intel i5 4690

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-H87N-WiFi

GPU: Gainward 980Ti (3446 model)

RAM: Kingston 16GB DDR3 1600

PSU: Silverstone Strider Gold 750W ST75F-GS

Case: Silverstone Sugo SG13 Mesh

HDD: Kingston V300 - 240GB

My concerns at the moment are:

  • The 980Ti fitting into the case, as it measures in at 10.68in (267mm) - possible to still fit it in?
  • 750W PSU, is it a bit of an overkill?
  • CPU fan - Do the CPU or Mobo come with a fan for the CPU? If not - what you guys recommend.

Happy to hear your thoughts guys. Thanks in advance!

the 980 ti should fit

the 750w is overkill, go for something like a 600w to 650w max

The case gpu limit is listed as 10.5" which is 266.7mm. Gainward lists the gpu length at 267mm. I suspect that is 266.7 rounded up since the card appears to use a reference cooler which is 10.5"/266.7mm. EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Superclocked Video Card, for example has a listed length of 266.7mm.

The cpu can come with or without a stock cooler. Retail boxed versions usually include a cooler. Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor includes the stock cooler.

I would suggest a better performing ssd. Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Silverstone Strider 600W 80+ Silver Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply would be a better psu choice. It still has significantly more capacity than needed. It is shorter, (140mm), and is a much better unit than the ST75F-GS.

Gigabyte GA-H97N-WIFI Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard would be a good motherboard choice.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply! Really appreciate it. I was wondering why it would fit a TitanX but a 980Ti wouldn't be able to, I'm glad I got a second opinion.

The motherboard, I actually spelt incorrectly, and is in fact the GA-H97N, my bad.

What should I look for when picking SSD?  as I'm conscious of the price tag that comes with it.

Look for the best performance on 4K random reads and writes at low queue depths (< 5). If you work with raw footage look for units with better incompressible data writes.
