Im looking to build my first pc for when i go to university. So i will be using a micro atx case most likely.

My question is should i go for an amd 6300 or 8320 with a gtx 970 or something like an i5 4590 with a r9 280x or 960.

I will be looking to do some gaming but also the usual uni productivity stuff so will a more powerful cpu or gpu be better for me. Both configurations work out to be similarly priced so that doesnt concern me.

Any help would be great

i5 and 280x. Because you have an upgrade path and more powerful cpu so you can focus GPU, with the FX CPU you will bottleneck the 970 were it is basically a 280x.

I should mention that I would ideally like this build to last 4 or 5 years without much upgrading. I know that graphics requirements will increase for games but Im not bothered about lowering the settings a bit (Im from the console world so im used to it).
