Some 970s have bad coil whine, some don't have any.

For the most part, certain models of cards tend to have higher chances of getting bad coil whine, though really as an example, one evga gtx 970 acx 2.0 could have shitloads of coil whine, but another could have none.

 

I'd say probably the ACX 2.0 FTW+ is the best of them. (Not sure on the SSCLK 2.0+ either..)

 

The thickness of it is dual pcie slots, you could fit two cards stacked right on top of eachother with backplates on both. (Not that I'd recommend it cause that would kill air flow)

Though I don't have an evga card so I can't measure it.
