I downloaded the app on my phone and it seems alright but I can't quite figure it out. First off what exactly does Spotify do? Can you find individual songs or is it just a bunch of playlists? Why does the discover tab just show me this...

I'm just confused why someone would pay money for this. I'm using the seven day free trial of premium and it doesn't seem much better than free other than I can change the song anytime I want.

With Spotify Premium, you can also find and download albums to your device and IIRC choose the songs you listen to instead of listening to radio playlists.

I can't figure any of that out. I was hoping I could search for a few songs then have it recommend me music but the discover thing isn't working and I can't seem to find a solution online.

You can either go to the Radio tab and look through the preset categories they have or search a band or song that you like, then touch the 3 Dot button toward the bottom to bring up a menu to state a radio playlist based on that song.

EDIT: You can also create playlists that you can download for offline use. Premium allows for the offline playlists as well as taking ads away. I use the desktop application to do all of that because I like mouse and keyboard better :)

^This. It's the same menu in my Windows Phone Spotify app.

The way i use it is to search for the artists that plays the genre I like and look at the recommended artists which 99% of the time plays the same kind of music I like. Or you can play a Radio (instead of just shuffe) from the artist you like and it'll automatically shuffle the songs list between those recommended artist. If you go to browse, you can browse playlists created by other users and maybe start tweaking/mixing your own from there.

From there I will either save their musics for offline use or just build a playlist as the songs play from each artist. Also I like having the ability to remotely control the Spotify between my macbook, windows phone and android tablet.
