Motherboard switching
I wanna switch my motherboard to something that can hold an i5 or i7, but I have already built a PC that has a lot of valuable data in it.
I Googled some things, mainly asking "If I switch a motherboard, do I need to get a new lisence?" and "Will my data be lost or saved?" but never got a clear answer.
So I have many questions still lingering my mind:
Do I need to get a new Windows 7 license?
Will my data in my hard drive be lost?
What's the best motherboard to switch to for a low cost? (Mainly under $100)
You will probably need a new CD-key if it's an OEM license. If you bought the key yourself then call Microsoft to re-enable your key for a new system. It will re-register your old system license. You will not lose any data if you don't format the drive. Windows 7 and up (not sure about Vista), even if you reinstall Windows, all your files in that drive will be put in a folder called "Windows.old" in C drive. That is if you have enough space to install another copy of Windows in it.
