Buying Memory. Need advice.

Hey Guys! So exams finally over.  Getting some new-old ram. (for my old PC). It currently has some Kingston DDR2 2GB RAM. I'm currently using Xubuntu so don't really have any files that has my specs stored. I'll edit the thread later. 

 

So just asking, hen I'm buying new RAM, Does it has tp be of the same company or can I buy something from G-Skill and put it in the same Mobo.

 

I have a MSI G31-P21 mobo. So what option is the best? going with the same branded RAM? (Model has to be same too?)

It's not as big a deal these days and with DDR3 you're usually ok mixing and matching different brands (you'll just have to run them at the same speed, voltage and timings)... but with DDR2 I'm not really sure. Regardless of if it's possible, if you manage to get the same RAM it eliminates the risk for incompatibility.

It is not required that have to go with same brand the different brands hopefully functions well.

Just to be safe, if you get new RAM that's the same as the old, you'll have the security of knowing that it'll work.

actually RAMs cheaper here. So I have a better shot if I buy two dimms right?

Your motherboard has two dimm slots right? You mean throw away the old one and put in two new ones. Or buy two new ones in case one doesn't work with the old one?

You can mix and match DDR2 brands, just like DDR3, I do it at work almost daily. The only thing you have to configure is to make sure they are running at the same speed and timings (match to the lowest kit) and you're good to go.
