Hi all,

So it was my birthday this week, and after spending some money in the ubisoft sale (big AC fan), I've got enough left to upgrade my PC. I currently have enough to buy a new hard drive (I only have a 160GB one) and an i5 (I got a z87 motherboard for one already). Should I buy a 4670K or 4690K, or should I buy a locked CPU and buy another stick of RAM so I have 8gb?

I'd say save, get an unlocked one, another DIMM, and a bigger drive.

If you aren't in a rush (it seems you aren't) might as well make it all better at once.

The projects never end in my line of work.

If you have 4 for now, you MIGHT be able to get away with just getting a 4690k (which answers one of your questions.) since you can buy a ram stick anytime, but one does not simply upgrade a non-k into a k, but if that board doesn't natively overclock a 4690k (if it doesn't) then pick up the RAM stick, but I can't imagine a non-k CPU being cheaper to the point u can buy more ram.

The board can OC a 4690k, I checked incase I could get a 4690k cheaper than a 4670k. And the stick I was going to get has dropped £15 since I bought my first one, so I could probably get away with buying another one in the next few weeks

I would go with the 4690K, unlocked for the possibility of overclocking, if extra bang for your buck sounds good. But if I were you (depending on your budget) I would get an SSD. They a pricey, yes, buy once you start using them, normal hard drives are just stupid slow. You could then use the 160gb disk as a game drive. Not huge, but its something!
