Hello! Any video editor/3d graphist here?

Hello Everyone,

Just to say hello and also to check out if there is any video editor and 3d artist willing to share their pc config. I am in the process of building my PC and I want to know what other guys like me, doing videos editing (premiere pro cc) and 3d work (3dsmax and 3d element in After effect) are using.

Thank you guys for your help, amazing community here and great help!

I do a decent amount of youtube video work, and I've had formal training through TAFE. I'm rocking a quad core i5, 8 GB of ram, a GTX 960 and a single hard drive. All but one of those have some slight issues. The i5 works brilliantly for the renders, but it isn't the world's fastest chip, obviously. Something like an i7 or a hyper threaded Xeon will work much better for that. The ram is not enough. Anyone who says otherwise is lieing, especially when doing the conforming, as it typically has to store a large amount in ram, which then gets put into your virtual memory, slowing everything down, especially when you're also reading from said disc (although more on that later). the GPU is probably overkill for editing, that said a good GPU can make up somewhat for a bad processor when in Premier using the CUDA/Open GL rendering in the timeline (although not so much while exporting), and is probably a better investment then a better CPU if you want to do a bit of gaming (I also think 3DS max also uses it, but I'm not sure). Finally, if you can afford it, having at least 2 drives is not a bad idea, one with say software and the OS and the virtual memory, and one for video files (even better is one more as a scratch disk, which can typically be a fair bit smaller).

All that said, do take what I say with a grain of salt, as I don't have a large amount of formal training with Premiere, and what I have got doesn't mention the hardware.

Normandy - Intel Core i5 3470, 8 GB Corsair Vengenace LP, EVGA GTX 960 SSC, Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP, WD Blue 1 TB, Seagate 320 GB (steam), Seagate 320 GB (experimental, second OS, etc), Windows 8.1 + Ubuntu 14.10

Garrus - HP Stream 11

Cool, thank you elecxonica.

Your drive is HDD, 5400 rpm?

You edit HD or full HD? Preview in premiere at 1/4 quality playback?

Did you have any issues with the driver of the gtx 960 when using Premiere? You are using Premiere CS6 or an older version?
