I was asked to fix a flash drive that had some virus on it, and save some important MS word files from it.

So when I plugged the flash drive in my pc, Avast detected a virus and fixed it... I didn't pay attention to the message so I don't know what kind of virus it was, also can't find any Avast history blog.

Anyway, now all word files on the drive seem to be "broken".  I get this when I try to open one:

Note: the files were created on MS word 97 - 2003, and not in English.

Currently I'm using MS office 2010 professional.

I tried few different repair tools, and a converter, but nothing worked and some even don't recognize the files.

There are also some PDF files on the drive that have the same problem. It doesn't even recognize them as PDF but some weird file type: JMGYIXJ File

So any advice on how I can fix the problem or restore the text?

Thanks.

Sadly it seems the virus really did a number on the files, I would suspect they are lost for ever. Have you contacted Microsoft support as they might some suggestions?

Have you tried running CHKDSK on the flash drive? This checks file system integrity. Now it MIGHT delete the files that are corrupted so...make copies if possible. As far as data recovery, I'm not sure if a data recovery program would help since the data is there, just jumbled/corrupted.
