Hallo :)

I have build a small HTPC/file server.

MB: Asus H87I-Plus

CPU: I5-4570T

Ram: Kingston 2x4GB 1600MHz

HDD: 3x3TB WD RED

OS HDD: Seagate XT 320gb

I have make a Raid 5 with the 3 WD Drive.

The stribe size is 64KBs

Read speed 280-290MBs

Write speed 50-60MBs

Is that normal or whats wrong with the write speed?

I thing is really slow and i know i have to make a Calculation on all the data but i have hope on write speed of 150MBs

The cpu only use 2-5% when i write data to the raid.
What can i do to get a better write speed or do i really need cache for this?

I dont like cache becurse then i need a UPS so i not lose any data.

Is there some one that know about raid i can tell what i can try or is 60MBs write speed okey?

You sir, have a wonderful day ?  | Sorry for my bad dyslexia English  :(

The problem is the built in raid controller on the h87 chipset.

For raid5 the controller makes parity calculation for one drive and if you don`t have a high end dedicated raid card, the write speeds will be a little bit slow, like in your case.

  • 2 months later...
  • 3 months later...

I have the same motherboard and almost the same cpu (4570) .. I tried the same with 3x WD 3TB Green

Raid5: 300MB/s read and 200MB/s write

Raid0: 400MB/s read and 350MB/s write

Green and Red are almost identical...

How did you make the raid ?, in Windows or in the controller ?

You need to enable WriteBack Cache... in Intel RST... then you will be able to write with 250 MB/s

But i dont have a UPS and with WriteBack Cache on and the Power goes out i will lose data. So i dont want to use Cache without a UPS
