The issue is that from android 4.4.4 and forward they changed the way apps can access external storage.  the apps that came installed in your device from the factory all have root access and can write to the SD card, but any new apps you download from the playstore can't, unless you root your phone.

 

This was not a bug, google decided to implement this as some kind of safety measure against malicious apps.    But in reality this is not helpful, and is just a bother for most users.

 

With lollipop they have said that they made a few changes, but is not sure that old apps will work with SD cards.
