970 and PSU

Go to solution Solved by Rolling Potatoe,

The PSU is more than enough for that setup, no worries.

If you just browse and game the additional 8 gb wont make much of a difference, no matter how fast they are.

The main difference between the manufacturers is the cooling unit and warrenty.

The phantom coolers are relatively quiet and inexpensive, so I guess its a good choice for you.

I want to upgrade to a 970 but I don't know if my PSU has enough power. I don't want to overclock the card. My specs are:

PSU: be quiet! Straight Power E9 480W CM

CPU: i5-3570

MB: Gigabyte GA-H77-DS3H

RAM: G.Skill 8 GB DDR3-1600 Kit

HDD: Seagate ST2000DM001 2TB

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 460

Case: Cooler Master 690 II Advanced Midi-Tower KKN5

I'm looking to buy a Gainward GeForce GTX 970 Phantom, because I think the Gigabyte G1 is to big and the MSI GTX 970 Gaming seems not to be available in Germany.

So, is my PSU powerful enough and is the 970 Phantom a good choice (are there big differences between manufacturers)?

Unrelated: I'm thinking to buy a second 8GB DDR3-1600 Kit for a total of 16gb. I'm not doing any video editing, it would just be for gaming/multi tab browsing. Or would it better to wait and buy 16gb 1866 or higher ram later?

No need for 16gb

I recommend Gigabyte/Asus/MSI

PSU should be fine
