Currently i'm going to be building a rig, however I've come across an issue.

My current choice in processor is the i5-4690k with the corsair H100i cooling, however, i've been giving some thought towards purchasing the i7-4790k whilst reducing some cost from the cooling with a Hyper Evo 212.

Currently I'm not sure which to grab, I'm more in favour of the 4690k with the Corsair H100i so that I could upgrade to a newer processor when they are released, allowing for me to keep lower temperatures and overclocking capabilities.

Other hardware pieces just to add incase anyone wants to know:

Case - CM storm Trooper

Motherboard - Asus maximus VII Ranger

RAM - 8GB hypxerx fury 1866 (Will upgrade in the future if needing)

GPU Choice - Asus Strix GTX 970 (Single Card for now)

ssd - 120GB samsung 840 evo

hdd - 1TB Caviar Black

PSU - Corsair 650W CS Series modular gold

Wireless - Wireless N card (300mbs)

Overall cost is the reason i'm wondering about the two choices.

It totally depend on what are you going to do with your rig. Just gaming and normal daily task, go with an i5, HEAVY rendering videos, 3D modeling stuff go with an i7. Also as for the Cooler, for low-mid lv cooler an 212 EVO is perfectly fine, AIO is for abit more heavy OCing (mind you that you really dont need any OCing atm if you are talking about games) and also, AIO or air cooler will both cant cool your CPU any lower than the room temp.

AS for your part choice, I think you could go with a cheaper mobo like a MSI Z97 G45 or Gaming3/5 if you dont use all the function of the Maximus, but well, up to you.

My rig: Intel Core i7 4790k | MSI Z97 PC Mate | GSKILL Ripjaws X 16GB 1866MHz | ADATA Premier SP550 480GB SSD | Seagate Barracuda 3TB | Seagate Barracuda 2TB  | MSI Gaming X GTX 1070 | Thermaltake Versa N21 | Corsair CX550M Semi Modular PSU | AOC G2460PF 144Hz | Logitech G502 | GSKILL Ripjaws KM780  | GAMDIAS HEPHAESTUS V2  PCPartPicker | Old Build Log | New Build Log

1. Budget & Location

2. Aim

3. Monitors

4. Peripherals

5. Why are you upgrading?

1. UK & £900, already purchased my RAM and gpu will be obtained in a few weeks being excluded from cost

2, Gaming at 1920x1080 with ultra det, with the rare time going for 2500x1200 when out

3. My main monitor at home is 1920x1080 with a second 1600x900 for side stuff

4. Currently £10 of that cost is a very cheap keyboard which will be upgraded in the future

5. Using old laptop hardware

My aim is mostly just gaming in honesty, attempting to max out most games.

As for the features on the motherboard I was honestly paying that extra to avoid using the gigabyte gaming 3, was to fit the black/red theme, as the gigabyte gaming 3 seems to be quite brownish, but the cost is something i'm still wondering if its worth going to the asus board from.

The Gaming 3 or 5 from both MSI and Gigabyte is Red/Black isnt it? Also the MSI Z97 G45. If that's the only reason you go with the Maximus then dont. It's quite expensive for what you are doing.

And just to max out games, you dont need Ocing CPU and an i5 is fine. You may need to OCing GPU for some stupid unoptimized port games though~

Yeah, its seems to be black/red, seemingly its only got the look of being brown when it's under a lot of light from what i'm seeing from other people's footages, which when put into the case itself shouldn't be an issue since there isn't a high amount of light anyway.

Currently i'm till more in favour of the 4690k setup, as I'm not utilising a lot of the 4790k in honesty.

Either go a 850 or get a MX100 SSD, EVGA G2 750W is a better PSU and nice for going SLI later and you have enough power has a 9.8 out of 10 on jonnyguru, meaning a insanely good PSU. For the rest I agree with Megazero.

Yeah i'm going to choose the gigabyte z97 gaming3, along with the hyper evo

Yeah i'm more than likely going to be getting a second asus strix 970 sometime in future, so since i'm doing gaming the 4690k is more than capable seemingly.

Feel free to add anything else folks, but I'll thank you for your time and help, as it is very appreciated.
