FreeNAS UFS Features

Go to solution Solved by Captain3xtreme,

You should install Freenas onto virtualbox and create 3 virtual disks to see what options UFS supports. I had a UFS mirror for a while that worked fine. Also according to one of the devs on the Freenas forums UFS is being completely removed in the future. Freenas definitely looses its allure for me when you have to use hardware that supports ECC ram and massive amounts of it for your custom NAS build.

My experience is that after I heard about UFS support being removed I went looking for other NAS software and found OpenMediaVault which is Debian based and amazing in my opinion. It doesn't have the Jails feature of Freenas but you can accomplish all the same things you can do on Freenas.

I have an OpenMediaVault NAS running right now with Plex and Transmission installed, I can also run a Minecraft server on it and Owncloud. Look up omv-extras if you do decide to use it.

Hey guys,

Just wondering about the features of FreeNAS using UFS. I'm not using ECC RAM in my build, so I was wondering if I could use RAID5 or something similar with a UFS filesystem in FreeNAS. Couldn't find any data on the FreeNAS forums since they won't give any info other than not to use it.

Would I be able to run 3 disks in RAID5 or RAIDZ? Looking for 500GB of storage using 3x250GB disks. (I'll have a spare on the shelf so if it dies I'll be able to replace it quickly, and it'll all be media from DVD rips, so I don't really care about the data on it.

Perfect. Thanks so much! OpenMediaVault it is

Yeah I realised a lot of people on that site were hardware snobs :/ If you don't have top level hardware, you aren't eligible for help by them.

I don't mind UFS not being supported, but I'd rather have RAID/Mirroring, Plex and Transmission on it.

An extra question - are there other options for streaming to mobile? I intend to share the media with a bunch of people, but I don't think they're willing to pay for the app.

I think Plex is pretty unique in what it does transcoding video, Subsonic does something similar but I haven't tested it.

Yeah there's this thing called the DLNA Alliance, that lets people stream stuff to various devices (there are apps on android and services like miniDLNA).

Plex is good, but the problem is that you have to pay if you want it on anything other than a desktop. Subsonic might be okay, but the problem is that you have to pay if you want video >.>

DLNA is a much more open and even VLC media player has support for it, making it easy to use.

You can install MiniDLNA on OMV easily using the plugin. The main benefit of using Plex is the fact that you can easily watch your content even outside of your local network.

Yeah, but unfortunately it costs money for mobile devices :(

I'll probably set up a VPN or something using pfSense and use that, and see if it works.
