i7 3770K Overclock

Laksen

Hello,

My friend gets his new pc on Wednesday, and want to overclock the CPU

Specs:

i7 3770k

ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77

H100i (maybe possible upgrade with NF-F12s in the future)

Kingston Hyperx Blu 2x8 GB 1600 MHz (PC3-12800)

XFX 7970 1000 MHz 3 GB

Corsair TX-750W-M

Corsair C70

So how do you do it on the 3770K, I have only got experience on the AMD platform.

Do you just bump up the multiplier or do you change the base clock, or a combination of both?

I am aware of all the testing needed, like prime 95

CPU: AMD Phenom II 965 (Corsair H60 with a Noctua NF-F12 Fan) - Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3 (rev. 1.4) - RAM:  4 GB kingston, and 8 GB kingston hyperx blu @ 1333 MHz - GPU: Gigabyte GTX 660ti OC edition SSD: 256 GB Plextor MP5-Pro - Sound Card: ASUS Xonar DGX - Headphones: Sennheiser PC363d - Case: Cooler Master elite 430 black -  Cooled by 2 Noctua NF-S12A Fans      Peripherals:ACER B243PWLAymdr IPS Panel - 1920*1200 - ACER S222HQL LCD Panel - 1920*1080 - Corsair M45 on a XFX Warpad - Typing on a Ducky Shine 2 Cherry MX Brown - Green LED - Racing with my Logitech G27 Racing wheel - other games Logitech F710

Overclocking is done mainly through the multiplier. You can up the base clock if you want, but you will not see much performance improvement from it since it will not go up by that much. Just increase the multiplier to something that is not insane. 4.0GHz should be a good place to start. Run Prime 95, and increase voltage as needed for stability.

For what it's worth, my 3570K (very similar chip) is at 4.4GHz with a voltage of 1.210 on an ASUS Maximus V Gene cooled by a Cooler Master Hyper N520. You should be able to go higher. I am limited by a high ambient temperature.

System: Intel Core i5 3570K OC@ 4.4GHz | Cooler Master Hyper N520 | ASUS Maximus V Gene | 8GB Mushkin 1866MHz RAM | MSI R7970 Lightning | Seasonic X-850 | Fractal Design Define R4 White Windowed Edition

Peripherals: BenQ XL2420T 1920x1080@120Hz | Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless (with Cherry MX Browns) Mechanical Keyboard | Razer DeathAdder Left-handed Edition Mouse | ODAC to various things
