Should I buy one for my for the build I am planning and if so how can you tell if one is right for your system...

I always use UPS's because you can get "cleaner power" and because it saves your bacon in the event of a power outage(Note: it doesn't actually save bacon, but you will be glad to have one). I don't have power outages too often(once a month on average) but I have brown-outs all the time, and UPS's ensure a stable amount of power so your PC won't even notice(and so it won't get damage). Most UPS's have surge protectors built into them as well, so that's an added benefit as well.

If you know how much power you system draws then you can determine one from there. Its also good to measure all of the things being used(like monitors, speakers, lamps, etc.) so you can add them up and get one that can power all of your things(don't put too much of a load, but stuff like the essentials). You can use a kill-a-watt or you can use a powersupply calculator(google it) and add use that number for deciding a UPS, or you can add that same number to the rating of your other appliances(Ex: 500w computer + 50w monitor + 20w desk lamp) to get a UPS for all of your things. You will want to get a UPS rated higher than your actual work load(just like picking a power supply for a computer), but you do't want to get one too big(because that can cause premature wearing).

Unless you have power outages that occur frequently or your running a server, you don't really need one.

It is pretty cool when the power surges and I only notice when all of a sudden my friends drop offline (they don't have UPS's)
