hitachi vs WD?

Go to solution Solved by DigitalHermit,

Backblaze's methodology is flawed in some way...

Seagate, WD, and Hitachi are some of the bigger brands when it comes to HDDs... They should be just as reliable...

so i was looking at some failure rate graphs https://www.backblaze.com/blog/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/   and i noticed hitachi is crazy low, and they are the same price of the WD im looking at. what are the thoughts on these guys? im looking at either a 1TB WD blue or black and this hitachi: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5AD1UP2364&cm_re=hitachi-_-9SIA5AD1UP2364-_-Product

The seagate results in that graph are very skewed. In any event, any is a good choice, get whichever is cheaper.

Check the warranty terms though... There's also some very minor differences when it comes to software...

i.e. my fresh Seagate went from 2% to 26% fragmented within a week (had to defrag thrice that week) while a fresh WD has a more gradual increase in fragmentation under the same usage scenario... The Seagate gets better after a few weeks though...
