display interfaces vs monitors refresh rate.

Hello,

 

I'm quite confuse about some stuff regarding the topic. I've done some research and what I've found is that of the different display interfaces all of them cap at 60Hz at a given resolution (specification wise)

 

For example, this chart from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort

 

And even Linus' TechQuickie video where he speaks about the different types of display interfaces and their specificacions, all the example he mentions cap at 60hz, which lets me to think that even if I get a 120hz/144hz monitor the display interface will bottle neck it anyways.

From experience I know that these interfaces are able to go above 60Hz so what gives?

 

* What does the refresh rate specificacion of each interface actually mean?

* How can I correctly calculate what is the actual refresh rate of a given interface for a given resolution?

* Is there a source where  I can find this information?

the spec is just a standard.

max refresh rate is going to be based on available bandwidth and what the scaler can handle.

for example HDMI 1.2 and single link DVI are 77hz at 1080p max and DVI Dual Link is 144 hz at 1080p, both are 60hz and 120 at 1920*1200 respectively

I have found that most HDMI 1080p60 monitors can be overclocked to 77 hz(191.4Mhz pixel clock) without any issue at all

most monitors will disable and signal processing beyond the framerate they are designed for. as a result my monitor doesn't do the low black levels without running in the YCbCr444 color space.

Interesting, how can I tell the max refresh rate of a given setup?

I've tried looking in the vast realm of the internet but coulndt find anything concrete :)
