Hello!

My friend, not me, used to have his Audio OK in the last few days. and today, he got his Plantronics RIG and when he tried to plug them in, Windows stopped detecting anything related to audio. The "Sound manager is disabled, do you want to enable it?" Error thingy, we clicked on "OK" and we tried to do a Sound tone test, but it came out with an error "FAILED TO PLAY SOUND TEST" Error.

We tried to plug in the headphones he used like yesterday and it didn't work either. Something in Windows has changed and we're 100 percent sure it is NOT the headset. (As he got them from the store brand new yeah?) So don't blame the headsets.

Anyway, what did I try:

- Updating the latest and greatest audio updates from Realtek/ASUS website. (He's using the ASUS Sabertooth X79)

- Plugging it in and out, ... nothing. even front audio doesn't work. Nothing works ok?

- Restoring the PC to 24th of this month, still nothing.

- Going to Device Manager and manually unistall the drivers.

- We tried to look for viruses and malwares, none were found.

What didn't we try?

- Format the PC

But we won't do it unless the issue is unfixable.

Hardware:

i7 3930k

GTX 570

Sabertooth X79

HDD 1TB

SSD 120GB

Software/OS:

Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit

So eh.. what the hell is this issue? Oh and weird enough, it was on "Testing mode" before, I disabled it to see if it does anything, but it didn't do anything.

I remember I used to have a similar issue. Turned out one of the apps was locking up the sound service somehow. I force quit it and then it the sound worked again. Assume you already turned the computer off and on again.

Try enabling it, if it isn't already enabled already. Then right click the sound icon >> Open Volume Mixer. See what's using it. Then force quit it.
