Question about PCI-e bandwidth

My motherboard supports up to x16 lanes of PCI-e bandwidth, which are taken up by my SLI graphics cards running x8 each.

What would happen if I then stuck in a sound card in the PCI-e x1 slot?  Will that then run my SLI setup in x8 & x4 mode (not even sure if Nvidia support x4 mode?), or will I be able to keep it at x8 x8 with a soundcard in x1?

 

Trying to get Dolby Digital in my system so I can utilize my virtual 7.1 headphones.

no, the x1 slots are usually from the PCH, and run in 2.0 mode

Nvidia doesn't support x4... also x1 lanes should be provided by chipset
