This is like the first time I'm actually playing skyrim, but I'm afraid I'm hostile with Dragonsreach and Riverwood because I broke in a house and stole a horse 

Anyways, how do I turn this around or gain rep?

If they attack you, draw your weapon and then put it away then the guard should engage in dialogue with you. You should be able to pick for them to take you to jail.

Oh thanks I'll try that, what about Riverwood though? They don't say anything, they just attack me straight away

I had to edit my previous post because it was out of order, but I think you got the point

 

But for Riverwood I'm not too sure. I can't remember what I did when I killed the village chicken to appease the citizens, or if I was even able to.

You don'y really "gain rep". If you have a crime rating, the only way to abolish it is to go to the city and walk peacefully near a guard, if they confront you, you get the choice to pay the bounty; bribe or persuade the guard; go to jail; or resist arrest.

 

If you don't have the funds to pay the bribe you go to jail.

 

 

If however you do some quests for NPC's within the city, you need to do 5, to be granted the title of thane from the leader, once you've done the 5 quests, simply talk to the leader of the city and they will grant you the title of Thane through dialogue options. You will then be able to purchase property in that city, and you get an additional dialogue option when a guard confronts you for a crime. You can declare that you are thane of that city, and get away with small crimes, not sure if it works for large bounty levels though.

I can't do anything inside the city, whenever a guard sees me they just try to kill me, I tried to do what Kloaked said but nothing pops up.

Leave the city, fast travel to the other side of Skyrim. Then use the in-game sleep function and sleep for at least 3 days, then travel back. The guards shouldn't attack on site, and just confront you at first.

Leave the city, fast travel to the other side of Skyrim. Then use the in-game sleep function and sleep for at least 3 days, then travel back. The guards shouldn't attack on site, and just confront you at first.

I did that, they sended thugs after me after a few days, I killed them, then I sleeped for 3 days again and they interacted with me. This is how it went:

 

Them: Stop. Blablabla

Me: I'll go to prison

Them: You're going to rot in the dragonsreach dungeon, What do you have to say for your defense?

Me: What's the problem?

After that I can keep repeating this, the only other option is saying 'I'd rather die than go to prison' instead of 'I'll go to prison'

sometimes it just doesnt work and you have to use it. had to use it a few times when a quest refused to progress. how much is your bounty??
