Hi.  I am very new to computer making, but I really want to build my own computer because it just seems like the smartest idea.  Any tips would be great, and also need help with what kind of case I should get.  This is what i have for an idea so far:

CPU- AMD FX-8350

MOBO- ASUS Sabertooth 990fx R2.0

RAM- G.Skill Ripjaws X series 8GB (2x 4GB)

Video Card- EVGA Geforce GTX770 2GB GDDR5 256bit

Hard Drive- Western Digital 1TB SATA 3 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache

PSU- Corsair CX750

Standard optical drive

Is this a good build? What can be done to make it better? I really don't want to spend more than $1000, and I really don't know what to get for a case as well.  Any tips will help.

Thanks

If you are not in US however, and that 1000$ is accounted for your country taxes as well, then your current build is ok, it just that you dont need a 750W PSU for a single GPU system, so better change to a cheaper 600W PSU. And try to fit an SSD in it

Case is really depend on your preference, in the build I made here I choose a random one as well.

I only have 2 things I would change. 16GB of ram. It doesn't cost that much more, and 8GB are beginning to close up to become the required minimum. Most new games I have found recommend 8gigs. And so do I. I can use more than that with ease. Hell, Linuis even uses 6gig in chrome only. As well as get a boot SSD, it's HEAVEN to have one. But this one isn't really nessessary though.

I was debating the 16gb instead of 8gb, but I don't plan on doing a lot of multitasking, just straight gaming.  Is the 16gb still the better choice?  Also, a SSD will come in near future, depending on how my budget goes, I'd definitely love to have one.

90% of applications and games don't use more than 4 cores so it would be better to have stronger cores than more cores

but what about the future? I don't really want to be dumping more money in than I have to.  Again, I am not trying to say you are wrong, I just want the best build I can afford, you know?

I don't currently have a case.  I was thinking mid tower, and preferably black.  I do need an OS, and I don't know what perphials are.  It will only be used for gaming.

Same thing, There's not even many games that utilized 4 cores, most of them still use only 1 or 2 cores and dump most of the work to the GPU and I dont see that thing changed anywhere in the near future. The i5 4690k will definitely perform much better than the FX 8350.

I understand. The 4690K will be plenty for 3+ years. If you are talking console optimization letting games use 8 cores, 4 of the cores in the consoles are used for multitasking

The R9 290 performance is close to the GTX 780 (alittle below the 780 though), so yeah, it's better. It perform abit slower than the R9 290x, which with a little overclocking you will get the same performance as an R9 290x stock as well, and if you compare the R9 290x with a 780, they are pretty much the same, with Nvidia's title favor the 780, and AMD's title favor the R9 290x

As you haven't mentioned peripherals (mouse, keyboard etc).... this has no HDD. u said you was going to get the ssd later, get the SSD now and HDD later will be easier to save for too as their cheaper. It got some upgrade ability too http://pcpartpicker.com/user/coffeecup/saved/dbsnTW
