How do usb hubs work?

Hullo,

Recently bought a cheapo usb 3 hub with 4 usb 3 ports, and on the box it said you can propagate the hub to a maximum of 127 ports.

How is this even possible? To be honest, I have no idea how a hub even works, like how it can manage a mouse, keyboard, usb stick, and external hdd all simultaneously without it losing track of which is which.
